Alabama teens visit nation’s capital
Approximately 45 students from Alabama are visiting Washington D.C. for the week-long National Rural Electric Cooperative Youth Tour, joining more than 1,500 students from across the nation. The tour is jam-packed with activities and visits to America’s most popular and historic places. Stops along the way include the U.S. Capitol, the Korean and Vietnam memorials, the Kennedy Center, Arlington National Cemetery (pictured), the Lincoln Memorial and the Smithsonian Institution among countless other museums and areas of interest.

The tour, sponsored by your local electric cooperative, the Alabama Rural Electric Association and the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, is part of a grassroots program to educate high school juniors and seniors on the electric cooperative program and the cooperative ideas for which it stands.

Alabama co-ops rally to help Oklahoma
Alabama’s rural electric cooperatives have rallied to support those affected by the May 20 tornado that wrought extensive damage in Moore, Okla. More than 20 cooperatives in the state have pledged financial assistance to the Oklahoma Association of Electric Cooperative’s “Touchstone Energy Cooperatives Oklahoma Relief Fund” to assist those affected in electric cooperative service areas.

“We received overwhelming support following the 2011 tornadoes that caused so much devastation in our state,” said Fred Braswell, president and CEO of the Alabama Rural Electric Association of Cooperatives. “Alabama’s co-ops are paying it forward to assist our friends in Oklahoma.”

Donations can be made with a credit card here, or by a check payable to “TEC Oklahoma Relief Fund” mailed to PO Box 54309, Oklahoma City, OK 73154.
